A “Ramayana Trail” tour in Sri Lanka lets you explore iconic sites tied to the ancient legend of King Ravana and Lord Rama. These itineraries typically last 5 to 8 days, bringing you to mythic locations like the Ravana Falls in Ella and the Ravana Cave where Sita was allegedly held captive.
Route: Colombo, Ratnapur, Balangoda, Haputale, Bandarawela, Ella.
The Seetha Amman Temple in Seetha Eliya, Nuwara Eliya, is the only Hindu temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to Goddess Sita. Located along the Ramayana Trail, it marks the exact site where Sita was held captive in the mythological Ashok Vatika.
According to the Ramayana epic, this temple marks the exact location of the Ashok Vatika. It is believed to be the place where King Ravana held Goddess Sita captive, and where she was finally discovered by Lord Hanuman.
Visitors can admire the vibrant, detailed statues of Hindu deities and the beautiful architecture. Right behind the temple, you can see the clear stream where Sita is said to have bathed, and miraculous footprints on the rock face believed to belong to Lord Hanuman.
The temple is free to enter, though donations are welcome. As it is a highly sacred Hindu site, visitors must dress modestly, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered. You will also need to remove your shoes before entering the temple grounds.
